New survey reveals potential SharePoint collaboration difficulties
More than a quarter of SharePoint projects have struggled to meet expectations, while a similar number have stalled, according to new research released by information management analysts AIIM.
The study, conducted alongside information management software firm Gimmal and mobile and email content management vendor Colligo, found that for two thirds (66%) of those who had cited dissatisfaction, the primary issue was that the Microsoft collaboration product was “hard to use.”
Almost three quarters (72%) argue there is not enough mobile support for their SharePoint implementations, while almost 40% said that lack of mobile was “frustrating” for their users. The ability to ‘distribute documents in a controlled way’ was seen as important for nine out of 10 polled.
Bob Larrivee, AIIM chief analyst, argued that there was a need for gradual improvement on SharePoint. “Less than 2% of respondents report that taking advantage of improved mobile device capabilities is a primary driver for moving to SharePoint 2016,” he explained. “This is an area of great opportunity for organisations to maximise the return and value of their SharePoint systems by extending SharePoint capabilities and process engagement beyond corporate walls.
“Mobile device use will improve productivity and operational efficiency, enabling employees, partners and suppliers to interact on an everywhere, anytime basis,” Larrivee added.
SharePoint is one of the bedrocks of Microsoft’s collaboration portfolio, but anything which improves the user experience is always welcomed. Harmon.ie, a software provider named as a finalist in Microsoft’s partner of the year reckoning, launched a product in September which aimed to marry SharePoint and Outlook to provide a repository for both quick emails and beefier efforts with documents such as approvals and contracts. The AIIM report found that 76% of those polled do not use SharePoint for email management.
The survey polled 274 individual members of the AIIM community in June with a wide range of job roles and titles, with the majority being records or document management staff (20%), IT consultants (18%), or heads of information management (17%).
