MobileIron announces partnership with Dropbox for secure document collaboration

Enterprise mobility management (EMM) provider MobileIron has announced a new partnership with Dropbox for greater and more secure collaboration.

MobileIron’s Access product, which aims to give organisations the ability to secure cloud services on mobile devices, will align with Dropbox Business, the cloud storage provider’s enterprise offering, to ‘ensure that only trusted users, on trusted devices, using trusted apps can access enterprise data in cloud services’, as the company puts it.

“The integration with MobileIron Access builds on Dropbox’s enterprise mobility management security controls by delivering [single sign on] capabilities,” the company notes. “The siloed sandbox architecture of mobile apps prevents traditional SSO techniques from working effectively so employees using a variety of cloud services like Concur, Office 365, Salesforce, or Tableau need to provide their credentials every time they log into an app.”

The Mountain View company already has a partnership in place with Box going back several years – the companies came together to add Box to the MobileIron AppConnect ecosystem as far back as 2013. MobileIron and Dropbox – as well as Box – also co-exist in the AppConfig Community, with MobileIron a co-founder on the EMM side and the latter as ISVs.

Previously, the missives were different. In 2014 the company discussed the ‘Dropbox catch-22’; noting that the value proposition for the cloud storage provider was ‘just too strong’, adding that employees were “increasingly sidestepping IT to obtain the tools they need.” Dropbox announced its intentions to launch a business-focused product in 2013, with Dropbox Enterprise, a new tier, introduced in November 2015. Research from MobileIron last year also found that Dropbox was among the most common consumer apps blacklisted by organisations.
