Mobile BI not being utilised, yet companies see its potential
Whilst more than half of organisations surveyed were mulling over a mobile business intelligence (BI) strategy, only 8% have taken the plunge and gone for it.
That’s the finding from business process intelligence provider Jaspersoft, whose latest survey of over 500 community members prompted some intriguing results.
Even though less than one in 10 companies polled had mobile BI in place, a whopping 85% said they realised the advantages of such a strategy.
But what would these advantages be? According to a study by the Aberdeen Group back in May, the key advantage for companies is an increased ability to gain business insights (52%), followed by more information during customer interactions (43%), and increased mobile employee productivity (27%).
According to recent Gartner research, more than half of mobile BI users will be using mobile exclusively by 2015 – so it’s certainly worth getting in there now.
Gartner, of course, releases its BI Magic Quadrant each year, with this year’s results leading to interesting findings. Whilst it’s not much of a surprise to see the big players involved, such as the MISO (Microsoft, IBM, SAP, Oracle) vendors, the prevalence of open source BI companies – including Jaspersoft – is also an eye opener.
“It’s important to recognise that deployment of mobile BI solutions has been a challenge,” Jim Bell, Jaspersoft CMO said. “BI providers can help accelerate adoption by making mobile delivery available without requiring additional work or additional fees.”
“With executives increasingly making important decisions on the road, it’s more crucial than ever to put data to work more quickly.
“More urgency is required to implement the tools that can improve operations and boost revenues, and we, in the technology industry, must do more to help organisations quickly and successfully implement BI on mobile devices,” he added.
Even though the current numbers aren’t high, it’ s definitely safe to assume things are going to go up quickly – 62% of companies are planning to implement mobile BI in the next 12 months, with just under half (47%) saying apps were currently in development.
What’s your view of mobile BI? Is it going to be a game changer for businesses taking the next step?
