The employee strikes back: Workforce steadily refuses BYOD while MAM is ‘DOA’
A new report from Bitglass has revealed that more than half (57%) of end users polled do not participate in a company BYOD program because they do not want employers’ IT departments to have visibility into their data and applications.
The paper, entitled ‘BYOD Security 2015: Rise of the Employees’, conducted two surveys on BYOD adoption and challenges with 2000 regular employees and 227 IT security professionals quizzed. Bitglass argues that while BYOD has room to grow, there needs to be a greater focus on data and a closer interest in personal privacy.
The report contains plenty of interesting statistics – the most surprising of which is that only 9% of organisations have deployed a mobile app management (MAM) solution. Bitglass blames this on violations of app licensing agreements and fragile wrapping approaches softening the impact of MAM.
Yet the report’s focus on privacy – or a lack of it – is clear to see. More than two thirds (67%) of employees said they would participate in a BYOD program if their employer was able to protect corporate data without being able to view, alter, or delete personal data and applications. This was echoed by IT professionals, with a similar number (64%) saying it would make their BYOD program more successful.
45% of enterprises polled have either an MAM or MDM (mobile device management) solution deployed, while 36% of enterprises use MDM solutions and worryingly, 28% say they are doing nothing about mobile security.
Bitglass argues 2016 will be the year of the end user revolt. Employees and IT security teams like the idea of BYOD, but they aren’t fans of company-owned MDM or MAM software being installed on their personal devices – and it’s reached a tipping point.
“IT teams must come to terms with reality – participation in BYOD programs is low because employees are worried about IT control over personal devices,” the report warns. “The next generation of secure mobility solutions takes a data-centric approach, preserving privacy and the user experience while securing corporate data without any footprint on the device.”
