Productivity contributes to “another stunning growth year” for mobile, says Flurry

The latest mobile growth figures from analytics provider Flurry have revealed app usage has grown by 58%, with every category – excepting games – seeing figures go up.

In particular, productivity apps saw a 125% session growth in 2015, according to the research. More and more consumers, especially in the younger demographic – in other words, the future workforce – are “using their smartphones, phablets and tablets as their primary computing device and their sole device to access email and other productivity apps, like Google Docs, Quip, Slack and the Microsoft productivity suite,” according to a Flurry blog post.

Of the other categories, the growth of personalisation apps – more than 332% increase in sessions in 2015 – was down primarily to a more personalised user experience in messaging apps, in particular emoji. Lifestyle and shopping apps grew 81% last year, continuing a longer term trend in mobile commerce, while news and magazine apps grew 135% in 2015.

Plenty of research on mobile productivity affecting the enterprise has been undertaken in recent months, with the consensus varied. A study from video conferencing provider Highfive back in September found that employees were becoming increasingly overwhelmed by the number of communication options open to them, while data from Alfresco Software in August argued employees were becoming frustrated by company-issued collaboration tools. With the Flurry figures, the onus is on organisations to make the right choices for productivity software, with employee buy-in.

Flurry was acquired by Yahoo! in 2014, and continues to release reports on the state of the mobile industry. Overall, 3.2 trillion sessions were logged during 2015. “We have been fortunate enough to have a front row seat watching the mobile revolution unfold and absorb – and in some cases demolish – industry after industry,” wrote Simon Khalaf, Yahoo SVP product and engineering of publisher products. in hearing industry leaders discuss subjects like this and sharing their use-cases?
