Many local authorities lagging behind on BYOD, research warns
Almost half of local authorities in England do not have a bring your own device (BYOD) policy in place, according to new research from Annodata.
The managed service provider submitted a freedom of information request to 79 council districts from all regions in England, and found 42% do not have BYOD implementation.
“The public sector in particular needs to approach BYOD with due diligence and special emphasis needs to be placed on security when employees are using their own devices to access an organisation’s data,” said Joe Doyle, marketing director at Annodata. “Despite this, our research highlights that a number of local authorities are yet to implement specific and enforceable measures.”
While government is never usually the fastest industry sector for technological change, Annodata did note the need for change. The upcoming General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) across Europe – although potentially impacting wider beyond that – means that organisations who do not comply could face fines of up to 4% of their total revenue.
Ensuring data is not leaked, or letting victims know when their data has been breached, is part of the issue – and as Doyle notes, employee-led technological trends are not going away any time soon.
“Employees now wish to use their personal devices at work in order to streamline processes and make their lives easier; they want to have the same print capabilities and access to documents on their mobile device as they do when using their desktop,” added Doyle.
“A BYOD strategy should be top of the agenda for organisations that don’t currently have one in place. Considering that digital workflow is becoming more important than ever, seamless printer access is just one way that BYOD can enable the local authorities to be more productive and efficient.”
Back in October, a report from Trustlook found that more than half of users surveyed had never received company instructions for using a personal device at work while more than three quarters were not familiar with their employer’s mobile device management (MDM) option. “There aren’t any instructions in place on BYOD here at my company. I use my device for work without any restrictions. The employer is cool with it,” wrote one respondent.
