How custom app platforms are changing the game for line of business professionals

It is both an exciting and a confusing time to be a line-of-business (LOB) manager. A recent study by Forrester found that LOB professionals don’t always agree with the operational technology (OT) or IT security teams about who is responsible for what in their device-connected networks. Almost half (45 percent) of IT respondents think LOB staff should be responsible for IoT default configurations.

Why? Most likely because the IT department is already swamped with...

Mobile mitigations for Meltdown and Spectre: A guide

Meltdown and Spectre are two critical vulnerabilities recently identified in modern processors. These vulnerabilities can allow unprivileged users to access memory belonging to other processes, including the kernel.

Much of the initial coverage of these vulnerabilities centred on desktop, server, and cloud systems, but they affect mobile devices as well. Apple, Google, Linux distributions, and Microsoft are now releasing patches to mitigate these issues.

How the exploits work

The rise of intelligent apps: Where do we go from here?

From mobile banking on the go to managing your calories – there is an app for anything and everything. People and businesses weren’t always this heavily invested in apps though. There has been a gradual progression in the functionality and adoption of apps as well as how...

Why organisations need to get ready for security automation

Data protection has always been a top priority for businesses. My first platform shift – and how we’re just getting started on the mobile mindset

My first job after college was at Oracle as a support engineer. I joined in 1993 and it was a very exciting time. The market was going through what my manager at the time called a “platform shift.” He explained how mainframes had served their purpose and were being retired and replaced by client-server technology that could be deployed at lower costs and take advantage of the computing power of a client workstation to help with the application load.

We’ve been through a number of platform shifts since...

As enterprise app expectations rise and timeframes fall, testing drops off in importance

Almost half of organisations admit to releasing apps before the quality testing stage as user expectations continue to soar.

That’s the finding from a new study released by Testplant which polled more than 750 development team leaders in the US and UK. Yet the deluge continues; 68% of respondents say they plan to build more apps during the coming 12 months.

Part of this is down to emerging technologies; 62% say their company will increase the number of apps which deploy machine learning and deep...

The figures come from a new study by NodeSource which aimed to examine the current momentum of Node.js within the open source software ecosystem. From complexity to simplicity: Lessons learnt in enterprise apps from Michelangelo

While it is true that core technologies themselves have greatly evolved, such as the iPhone which celebrated its 10-year anniversary in June, another evolution has occurred alongside technology: one of market demands and user expectations. These dictate the brief for how today’s technology solutions look and feel.

An underlying quality of that brief is simplicity. Not that this is anything new. From the Egyptian Bust of Nefertiti to Pablo Picasso’s Guitar, artists have acknowledged the importance...
